He took great pride in being a grandfather to Bentley, Riley, Brayden, Tucker, and Charlee. Charles is also remembered by his brothers, David Gates (Carol), and Tony Gates (Devada Galloway), as well as his sisters, Wendy Warren (Davey), Kim Ornelas, and Mary Gates.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Gates and Deloris Richardson Gates, who will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew him.
