Donald Curtis Sanders passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at his home in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.
Donald was born in Glenn, West Virginia, on Tuesday, November 3, 1936, to his parents, Charles Roscoe Sanders and Clara Easter Jones. One of three children, Donald grew up alongside his brother, Carl, and his sister, Josephine.
Affectionately known as Don, he enjoyed many pastimes throughout his life. He was especially devoted to his leadership with the Boy Scouts of America, spending time on the golf course, and had the unique privilege of working on the Gemini Space Project. He also lived in Conway, South Carolina, prior to relocating to Maggie Valley.
Donald was a member of the Protestant church and held his faith as an important part of his life.
Donald proudly served in the United States Navy. During his first two years, he was stationed in the Panamanian jungle. He later served aboard the USS Lindenwald and during the Korean War. He held the rank of Radioman Second Class, an enlisted Petty Officer specializing in communications technology.
Following his military service, Donald worked as an electronics engineer in the defense industry, with positions at ITT, Emerson Electric, and McDonnell Douglas.
Donald was married to his beloved wife, Dolla Mae Sanders, and together they raised two sons, Donald Craig and Brian Kent. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Dolla Mae Sanders; his brother, Carl Sanders; and his sister, Josephine Childers.
He is survived by his son, Donald Craig Sanders of Maggie Valley, North Carolina; his son, Brian Kent Sanders of Florissant, Missouri; his granddaughter, Danielle Renee Sanders of Wilmington, North Carolina; as well as six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Don will be remembered for his service, dedication to family, and the quiet strength and kindness he carried throughout his life. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
