Douglas Dale
DeMorest
June 7, 1957 – May 5, 2026
Douglas Dale DeMorest, lovingly known to many as “Dougie,” passed away peacefully in Haywood County, North Carolina, while in the care of Smoky Mountain Rehabilitation and Health Center. He was a man remembered for his hardworking spirit, kind heart, love of animals, and appreciation for the simple beauty found in nature and life’s quiet moments.
Doug was born in Mason, Michigan, to Roy Charles DeMorest and Edna Alfreda DeMorest (Tennant). He grew up in DeWitt alongside his siblings Carolyn, Roger, and Dennis. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1976 and carried with him throughout his life the strong work ethic and resilience that defined him from a young age.
Throughout the years, Doug held many jobs, but the work he cherished most was serving as a groundskeeper at Forest Lawn Cemetery. He took pride in caring for the land and ensuring beauty and dignity for the families and loved ones who visited there. His gentle spirit and appreciation for peaceful places made that role especially meaningful to him.
Doug found joy in farming, tractors, and rodeos, and he loved the outdoors deeply. He was also devoted to his beloved animals, especially his dogs Lexie and Peanut, and his cats Boomer, Cora, and Hurley, who brought him companionship and comfort through the years. Butterflies held a special place in his heart and seemed to reflect his quiet, free spirit.
He made his home in Candler and was preceded in death by his brother Roger, and his beloved wife, Sheila Turpin, whose memory he carried with him always.
Doug leaves behind his siblings Carolyn and Dennis, along with dear friends Christina Johnson and Leah Fox, who remained close to him and cared for him deeply. His family and friends will remember him for his warmth, his love for animals and nature, and the steady kindness he showed to those around him.
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Smoky Mountain Rehabilitation and Health Center for the care, dignity, and kindness they provided Doug during his time there.
In honor of Doug’s gentle soul and love for peace and creation, the following Prayer of St. Francis is shared:
"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.Where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith."
