Gary Lee Ray, 63, of Asheville, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026.
Gary was born on January 18, 1963, in Asheville, North Carolina, to James Franklin Ray II and Priscilla Arvalee Wallace Ray. He and his siblings were raised in south Asheville, in the family home where Gary continued to reside throughout his life.
He loved the mountains and the place he called home, and never wished to leave it.Gary was known as a loving son, brother, and friend who lived a simple and humble life. Throughout the years, he worked as a delivery driver for several companies and was appreciated for his quiet nature, kind heart, and dependable spirit.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hiking, exploring new places, and experiencing different cuisines — food in general brought him great joy.
Those who knew Gary will always remember his famous saying: “What cha got to eat?”
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Franklin Ray II and Priscilla Arvalee Wallace Ray, and by his brother, James Franklin Ray III (“Jimmy”).
Gary is survived by his brother, Steve Allman (Barbara) of Knoxville; his sister, Linda Ray of Candler; his sister, Terralene (“Terri”) Ray Robinson, and niece, Ashli Robinson, both of Asheville; as well as many close friends and extended family members.
He will be forever needed and dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
