Grant Joseph DesRoches Jr., 87, passed away on August 2, 2026, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. 

Born on June 15, 1939, Grant grew up in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he graduated from Woodbury High School in 1958.

He lived a full and adventurous life, finding joy in family, the outdoors, cooking, building, dancing, music, and—above all—his beloved wife, Barbara “Barbie.” Their 52 years together, including 40 years of marriage, were marked by a deep and enduring love.

Grant graduated from Woodbury High School on June 10, 1958, and later attended Colorado State University. He spent his working life in construction and insulation, a career he continued until his retirement in June 2001. He was an independent man who found joy in the simple things in life and took great pride in the people and world around him.

Grant had a passion for cooking, building, dancing, and spending time outdoors. He especially enjoyed canoeing and was known for always wanting to take on new adventures and try new things. Music was another source of happiness for him, particularly rock and roll oldies. Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis were among his favorites.

Perhaps Grant's greatest joy was caring for his wife, Barbara, whom he affectionately called “Barbie.” The two shared 52 years together and were married for 40 of those years. Grant's devotion to Barbara was evident in the little things he did every day. He would reach for her hand each night, kiss her, and hold her until they fell asleep. Their enduring love was a central part of his life.

Grant also shared a special bond with the family dog, Lola, who passed away a few years ago. He loved having her by his side, and she would sit on his lap every day.

Grant is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara V. DesRoches; his son, Bryan DesRoches; his daughters, Christine “Blue” Spotted Elk, Traci “Ed” Doughty, and Gwen “Rodney” Davis; his granddaughter; four grandsons; two nephews; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, as well as uncles, nieces, and two sisters.

Grant will be remembered for his love of family, his devotion to Barbie, his adventurous spirit, his enjoyment of music and the outdoors, and his willingness to try new things. His life was defined not only by what he accomplished, but by the love and companionship he shared with those closest to him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family has requested that flowers not be sent.
