Jane Churchill Young, of Mills River NC, departed this earth on October 21, 2025 at her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was 94.
Jane was born on October 14, 1931 in New York City to her parents Francis Rufus Bellamy, author and editor, and Viriginia Woods Bellamy, author and poet. They lived in Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island from 1939-1943, where they loved the countryside. She attended Westside School 2nd through 8th grade, with her brother Rufus Bellamy.
Jane’s parents divorced when she was thirteen (although they remarried in 1976). She and her mother moved to Eliot ME. She attended Eliot High School and then the University of Maine, where she graduated at age 21, majoring in English and Education, qualified to teach grades K-8.
On August 29, 1953, Jane married Lee Adams Young of Pembroke NH on August 29, 1953, who had just completed his PhD at Harvard in Physics. They lived in Cambridge MA 1953-54, Brookline MA 1954-57, Arlington MA 1957-63, Lincoln MA 1963-2009, and Mills River NC 2009-25. They produced three sons: Charles William Young born 1954, Robert Adams Young born 1955 and Andrew Bellamy Young born 1959. She raised and bred Persian cats, to the constant delight of her family. Each summer the family spent their vacations in Wellfleet, Cape Cod, and visiting Jane’s mother in Castine, ME.
Jane taught kindergarten for 1 year in Cambridge MA at a private school. She was the founder and director of the White House Pre-School, affiliated with Lincon-Sudbury Regional High School from 1964 to 1976, a curriculum for Home Economics.
From 1877-1990 she and her husband founded and owned Stagecoach Antiques, operating out of Sudbury MA.
Her husband Lee passed away on May 15, 2022. She is survived by her three sons, Charles and wife Nina of Hendersonville, NC, Robert and wife Nadja of Concord, MA, and Andrew of Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Hayley Young of Concord MA, Spencer Young of Allen Texas, Caroline Hunt and husband Jonny of Tomball Texas, and one great-grandchild, Oliver Solyom.
Jane was dearly loved by family and friends. Her kindness and warmth to all she met will always be remembered. She is greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 10, 1926, at 2pm at The Church of the Holy Family in Mills River NC.
