Katherine Moore Van Voorhis of Mills River, North Carolina went to be with Jesus on September 7, 2025 with her immediate family by her side. She died peacefully after a long courageous battle with cancer at the age of 68.
Kem was born December 18,1956 in Charlottesville, Virginia to Robert Moore and Betty Moore. She spent her formative years in Franklin, Virginia, attending Franklin High School and graduating St. Catherine School in Richmond, Virginia. She later attended Sweet Briar College where she met and married Greg Van Voorhis. Subsequently, she graduated from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia with a BS in Environmental Science. Greg and Kem were happily married for 48 years raising two sons, Graham and Kevin. Their family made career moves throughout the south including the Alabama Gulf Coast area, Texas, North Carolina, Louisiana and finally retiring to the mountains of Western North Carolina near Asheville.
Besides providing a loving home for her family, Kem had many passions including vegetable and flower gardening, collecting art, reading, and travelling with family and friends. Kem was an accomplished cook and homemaker with many talents for turning garden harvests into culinary works of art and creating amazing landscapes in her yard. She knew/knows Jesus and was an active member of Grace Church in Mills River, NC
Kem is survived by her husband, Greg Van Voorhis; two sons, Graham (Amanda) and Kevin Van Voorhis; father, Robert A. Moore. Jr (Melanie); brother, Steven Moore (Heidi); sister Cynthia Moore; and nephew Robert A. Moore, IV. She was preceded in death by her mother Betty McCormack Moore and brother Robert A. Moore III. Kem has touched many lives with her sweet and caring spirit and leaves behind a large extended family and friends network. She will be missed beyond words.
Ecclesiastes 12:7 “ And the dust returns to the earth as it was and the spirit returns to God who gave it”
A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Black Mountain Children’s Home in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
