Stephen Joseph Grigg, known to all as "Steve", passed away peacefully at his residence in Asheville, North Carolina on Sunday, May 10th, 2026. 

Born in Morristown, New Jersey, to James Francis Griggs and Kathleen Jones Murray, Steve was a true jack of all trades—a creator, fixer, and builder who was happiest when working with his hands. His life took him across the country and beyond, living in New Jersey, California, North Carolina, Florida, and Switzerland, and he carried his love for jazz and blues with him everywhere—Jeff Beck was among his favorites.

Steve found joy in many pursuits: playing guitar, golf, woodworking, and sharing a game of pool at The Social with his daughter, Kameron. He was a dependable presence in the lives of everyone who knew him, always ready to build, repair, or lend a hand.

He is survived by his daughter, Kameron Utterback (born May 19, 1987); his grandson, Kooper Booker; son-in-law, Daniel Utterback; brother, Chris Griggs, and wife Lan; nieces Maggie Madeve (husband Ashley Nichols), Case Madeve (son Henri Madeve), Stephanie Lewis-Myers (wife Angela Myers), Cailin Griggs, Lilly Griggs, and Jennifer McCoy; nephews Josh Lewis and David Griggs; and his best friend, Donna Tawants.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Joyce Griggs; brother, Jimmy Griggs; and sisters, Kathleen Griggs and Monica Bowhay.

In lieu of flowers and a service, the family asks that you turn up some Jeff Beck, or spend a quiet afternoon building something with your hands.
