Stephen Randolph Maynard passed away at the Elizabeth Hospice House on Sunday, November 10 at age 72 after a brief battle with cancer.
Born on June 3, 1947 in Hamlet, NC, he was a son of the late Robert Clyde Maynard Jr. and the late Ethel Rushing Maynard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Clark. He was a longtime member of Saint Barnabas Catholic Church in Arden, NC where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and CCD Sunday School Teacher for many years.
He served in the United States Army Security Agency, achieving the rank of E5 Sergeant. Upon discharge from the Army, he settled in Arden, NC with his wife and started his own business. Stephen was an avid fisherman and HAM radio enthusiast, enjoyed piloting ultralight planes, and served Henderson County DSS as a Guardian ad Litem for several years. He loved working with his hands and created many amazing pieces of outdoor furniture for friends and family. He was known for his sense of humor and always had a funny story to share.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sylvia; two daughters, Delia and husband Jeff, and Denique and husband Sean; six grandchildren; brother, Robert Maynard and wife Eunice; and sisters, Lisa Layton and husband Roscoe, and Camilla Hudson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am on Monday, November 18 at Saint Barnabas Catholic Church in Arden, NC with the family receiving friends immediately afterwards. Military Honor Ceremony to follow at 2:00 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
In lieu of flowers his family requests that donations be made in Stephen’s memory to Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC or the National Kidney Foundation.
