Carin Lynn (Engen) Engen

1947 - 2021

Candler resident, Carin Engen, 74, passed away on April 4, 2021 at her home surrounded by family.

Carin was born in Sacramento, CA but lived much of her life in Garberville, CA. She was the Daughter of her late parents, Clarence Engen and Betty Matson.

She was an amazing felt artist and taught many workshops at events and places such as the Black Sheep Gathering, Oregon Flock and Fiber, Natural Fiber Fair, and John C. Campbell Folk School. She also enjoyed botanical printing, quilting, sewing, spinning, and weaving. She hosted many memorable fiber retreats and gatherings at her home in Garberville. In recent years, she relocated to Candler to be closer to family. She settled into and restored an old craftsman style farmhouse, which she loved. When Carin moved to Candler, she quickly made very special friends in two groups of fellow artists, “The Shady Ladies” and WOW. She was at home, with family, when she passed. Carin will always be remembered for her positive and beautiful spirit. She will be missed dearly.

She is survived by her two sons, Stephen (Kym) Graham of Mooresville, NC and Eric (Susan) Graham of Conyers, GA; her grandchildren: Jessica Graham, Sadie Culberson, Andrew Graham, Taylor Herne, Lauren Graham, Claire Graham; and great-grandchildren: Braelyn, Elling, and Sawyer; her brother, David Adams; her sisters, Sharon Mansfield, Claire Brown, and Leslie Overstreet; and by her loving friend of many years, David Wilson.

Carin requested “no services” but the family will gather privately.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her honor to: Care Partners of Asheville, NC (carepartners.org) at 68 Sweeten Creek Rd. Asheville, NC 28803 (828) 277-4800 or donations to the John C. Campbell Folk School.

On April 4, 2021, David Wilson, Sr. and his family heard the news of the death of Carin Engen. Carin was with David Sr for 24 years. She moved to North Carolina in 2017 to be near her two Sons & their families. They were all originally from Garberville but first one son & family moved out there then the second son. Carin ached to be near them again & made the hardest decision one could make: leave her life with David Sr. & begin a new life w/her adult sons, 2000 miles away. The Wilsons of Humboldt County, CA consider Carin a family member. She surrounded David Sr, his sons & their families including the mothers of David Sr.’s sons with her generous and creative spirit. Carin was an award winning, awe-inspiring fiber artist. We cherish & hold many works of art crafted/designed by Carin’s adoring hands over those 24 years we had her in our lives. We know Carin is loved by so many more than just us our hearts are broken 💔
