Jarvis Hudson

May 8, 1945 — May 29, 2019

Asheville

Jarvis Ellis Hudson, age 74, passed away on May 29, 2019, at his residence in Asheville, North Carolina.

Jarvis was born on May 8, 1945 to Ellis and Katie (Collins) Hudson, (both deceased), of Little York, Indiana. Raised in Little York, he attended Salem High School and went on to attain a B.A. from Indiana University Bloomington, a M.S. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. For the majority of his professional life he served as a professor in the Biology Department of the Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. During his time there he also worked as a director of a nature preserve and botanical garden for native plants on university property.

A quiet, gentle man, Jarvis loved nature and spent most of his time in the woods hiking and gathering scientific data, logging many hours in the Smoky Mountains and the forests of southern Indiana. Fluent in Spanish, he collected data, botanical specimens, and counted and banded birds in Mexico, parts of South America and Costa Rica.

There will be a private memorial service held for him in Asheville, North Carolina in June of 2019.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ellis and Katie Hudson Scholarship Fund (Little York Grade School Scholarship Fund at Washington County Community Foundation, PO Box 50, Salem, IN 47617) or The Sierra Club (www.sierraclub.org/ways-to-give). In lieu of flowers, Jarvis would have wanted you to take a walk in the woods and observe all the beauty to be found there, including the wildflowers.

He is survived by his daughter, Ursula Marcum of Baltimore, Maryland, and his brother, Henry Hudson, of Mount Vernon, Indiana, as well as his nephew, John Hudson of Floyds Knobs, Indiana and niece Jenna Plasse of Crothersville, Indiana.
