Joseph Clarence “Joe” McCall
Joe McCall was born in Jackson County, NC, on May 26, 1940, and he passed unexpectedly on Nov 12, 2019, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, at 79 years old.
Joe was a pillar of the community. He owned and operated Joe McCall Excavating serving Transylvania and the neighboring counties, as well as anyone else who called on him, for over 40 years. He was a wealth of knowledge in all things grading, septic, tree trimming, excavation, and really just about anything work related.
Joe was the kind of man who never met a stranger. He was a very charismatic fellow who welcomed you in, worked you hard, imparted knowledge upon you (whether you wanted it or not), and told you endless jokes and stories. He would cut up and have a good time with everyone he came in contact with. His zest for life could hardly be matched. He worked hard, provided for his family, and was always willing to help anyone in need. You never knew where you may find him: out dancing, playing cards, gambling, hunting, fishing, camping, at the ball fields, having dinner, or supporting his wife, children, and grandchildren in their many endeavors. You can rest assured that, if he was involved, it was sure to be a good time! It is rare to find a person with so many wonderful qualities such as loyalty, integrity, understanding, and selflessness, and he will forever be greatly missed. We love you, Papa!
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Danie Hunter; father, Clarence McCall; brothers and sisters, Leroy Crowe, Mildred McCall, Wanda Watson, and Bessie Jenkins.
He is survived by his loving wife, partner, and friend of 59 years, Wilma; daughters, Rhonda Friedline (Kenny); Sonya Garren (Joey); grandchildren, Lechai Owen, BJ Summey, Morgan Summey (Summer), and Briar Garren, all of Pisgah Forest; brother, Delbert McCall (Linda) of Walhalla, SC; along with a crowd of so many others that either his family brought in or that he seemed to pick up, love, care for, and call family along the way.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Turkey Creek Baptist Church at 1pm. The family will have visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Special Needs Baseball (snbaseball.org).
